Stage 4 throat cancer

Hi All,

We just found out today that my husband has stage 4 throat cancer and is due to have radiotherapy and chemotherapy. I want to be strong for him but am terrified of telling our kids (11 and 13) and of the financial implications as he is unemployed, as well as what he will have to go through physically and mentally.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks x

  • Hi Emma, Very sorry about your terrible news. My advice is:

    - get as much info as possible from the medical team. your husband may not wish to know everything, especially info concerning prognosis, but he can give permisson for you to talk to the medical team privately and ask any questions you want

    - the kids need to know, but you may prefer to tell them after you have spoken to the medical team and have as much information as possible.

    - if you have a good friend or family member that you can trust, and is financially savvy, then ask them for advice, and go through your financial options with them. Mcmillans and citizen's advice are two organisatins that can give financial advice.

    - make sure you look after yourself, as the burden, for everything, now falls on you.

Your news is truly awful, there is no getting round that.  On this site, everyone understands what you are going through. You have all our love and support. I wish you and your family all the very best. xx Harry

  • Thanks Harry,

We told the kids and they reacted well, but I'm keeping an eye out for any delayed reactions.

I've got in touch with my financial advisor who is visiting me next week and I will speak to McMillan as well next week.

Thankfully today I find that I can function without crying (alot of the time at least) and so organising medical exemption and dental appointments and will writers has been possible (makes me realise that I really dont like adulting though ).
