palliative care with morphine syringe

Hi I looking for some advice. my sister was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2017. She has had two rounds of chemo, and and in May 2020 her scan showed that the cancer was progressing. In June 2020 she was put on a drug called Capecitabine but had a very bad reaction and ended up in hospital with a heart problem. She then went home for just a week and was experiencing terrible pain in her stomach. This turned out to be a blocked bile duct and after that Acute pancreaitis due to rupture. the last 5 weeks she has gone downhill and I am very worried about her. The hospital are struggling to get her pain under control and she is on a morphine syringe driver. The doctors have now said if she goes home she will have to have the morphine driver at home with a palliative care District nurse come in every day to help her. I need to know if this is the beginning of the end. Not being able to visit my sister is tearing me apart due to Covid 19. I would really appreciate comments on other people's experiences.

  • Hi my sis diagnosed 2018 with triple negative breast cancer. 15 lymph nodes removed. Went through chemo, radiotherapy. After a year on remission, unfortunately after 2 months found another lump on breast, triple negative again. More chemo, then put on capecitibane tablets. After scan tablets not working, cancer progressed and spread to bones spine and liver. Had one chemo, after tablets, and ended up in hospital with a high temperature and low white blood count. Unfortunately took pheumeno in both lungs and 2 blood clots, sadly she passed away on 2nd June 2020. This all happened so fast over 10 days in hospital. Covid didn't help matters. Praying for your sister and sending love and best wishes.x

  • Hi Cathy.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister. it is so hard to find the right words. I definitely think Covid has made this so much worse for family members. I totally understand why the hospital is so strict but at times when your loved ones need us more than ever its hard. I am trying to stay positive for my sister but to be honest the last 5 weeks have been the worse in all the three years she has had the cancer. She is very weak, and not sure what the next couple of weeks will be bring especially as the hospital want her to resume chemo. Please take care of yourself, and thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. xx♥️
