Struggling with granddad's renal cell carcinoma diagnosis

I'm a nurse and I know I should know about prognosis and treatment options but I'm finding myself researching about my grandads latest CT results. Primary diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Results have recently shown a renal cell metastasis to the stomach and liver. I'm finding it very difficult to come to terms with because I know that the outcome isn't great due to my grandads overall health. I'm just needing someone to talk to about it all. Any help and support would be appreciated.

I'd also like to add that I find it very hard to speak to my family as they always ask about my grandads condition. I also seem to be known as the nurse and that I too have emotions in all this. Is there anything that I could do without coming across as a terrible person.

  • Hello Pdr92

I'm so sorry to hear about your Grandad's diagnosis. I'm sure that you're not the first nurse to have found herself in this position where the family turn to you looking for answers. It can be hard to switch off that professional facade sometimes but I'm sure that your family will understand if you're honest with them and say that you're struggling.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses? I'm sure that they would be able to offer some advice and support. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you.

do you know of any other forums that could be of help? It helps putting the professional facade when we get bad news.

I will definitely try calling the contact number.

    thank you again.

  • Hi Pdr92
If you want to connect with others who are specifically dealing with kidney cancer then have a look at Kidney Cancer UK - they have an online support group. I'm afraid I'm not aware of any forums for health professionals who have a loved one with cancer.

Do give our nurses a call for a chat.

    Best wishes,
