Stage 4 Kidney Cancer-refusing treatment

My 72 year old mum was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer that had also spread to her liver on 22nd April 2020, the cancer was too big to operate on. She's had a terrible time taking Pazopanib and after a 2nd hospital admission for sickness (her weight dropped to 6 stone from 8) she's now decided she no longer wishes to take any further treatment as she felt she didn't have quality of life on Pazopanib. It's been 5 weeks with no treatment and now she's started to feel really tired, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. We have a district nurse attend daily to give her blood thinning injections and I'm concerned the cancer may have spread to the lungs. I'm scared that she's fading away infront of me.

If someone is stage 4 and not taking any treatment what is the prognosis?

  • Hi ELF1984, stage 4 is the last staging so it's incurable and palliative care such as chemo and immunotherapy keep it at bay, so if she's having no treatment, as she wishes, then it's a guessing game.  My husband has lung, liver and stomach cancer and his kidneys are not good we are always being told he has too drink more water to receive his treatment.  Kidneys are so important for our bodies to cope well but only your oncologist can advise on her outcome.  Ring her McMillan nurse and ask for guidance.  Best wishes at this time from me, Carol.
