Dads cancer

My dad has terminal lung and brain cancer he got out the hospital on April 1st this year he was doing great then 2 weeks went rapidly down hill we phoned 111 on Sunday the doctor came to see him and he said it looked like he had some kind of infection cause he couldn't walk , was breathless,  wasn't eating , was coffing and was sleeping a lot more , we are under no illusion he's going to get better cause he's got terminal cancer but he got back out of hospital today the same way he went in ,  the hospital phoned today to say he was getting out as he's able to walk himself unassisted I told them I don't agree with what there saying as they already let him fall while he was in there , but the ambulance brought him home today only 1 driver who was going off his head saying it should have been a 2 man job getting him home,  he got out the ambulance and he couldn't stand never alone walk myself and my neighbour had to put him in a wheelchair and carry him up the 5 stairs at the front close,  I was wondering if I should get a 2nd option for a different doctor/ hospital as I just don't agree with what they say and how I would go about it

thank you

  • I'm sorry to read what's happened Tony, it sounds very tough.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon but I just wanted to share the information we have on our website about getting a second opinion.

I hope this helps but our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to discuss this with them as well.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi Tony o, this is scandalous but happens on a regular basis, they just want them out of the hospital and if they can stagger from the bed to the toilet it's considered walking unaided.  I would consult your Dad's GP and explain the position.  Perhaps Social services could get involved and then you have someone else fighting your corner.  Is anyone with him full time or his he home alone?  I really wouldn't bother with a second opinion it's time wasting and will prolong matters.  The doctors are open for phone calls so first thing tomorrow give them a call and fully explain what is going on.  They should be able to talk through the best options for you all.  Good luck, Carol x
