New Diagnosis of Terminal Bowel cancel spread to liver

My father in law is 88 and has last week been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer which has spread to his liver. An operation was too dangerous for him and we have been told he is too unwell for further treatment. He has had a stent fitted to relieve the blockage in his bowel, since this he is still very weak. He wants to come to stay with us as he feels to unwell to cope on his own. We are more than happy to look after him and are preparing our house to hopefully be free from virus for his release from hospital.
I really want to know, how he really is medically and how fast he may deteriorate with this cancer.
Doctors have not mentioned possible length of time left or apart from being terminal and excessive lesions in his liver, it is very difficult not having a face to face discussion and not allowed in the hospital, there are so many questions but we feel we also don't want to keep bothering the staff on the ward with phone calls.

  • Hello Hindylind,

I am so sorry to hear your father in law has been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer which has spread to his liver and that no further treatment is available to him. It must be really hard for you and the family and it's very nice of you to be preparing your house for him. It can be hard to get answers at the moment and it can be difficult for specialists to give a definite prognosis as this will vary from one person to another. As it's not been easy for you to arrange face to face discussions with his medical team, perhaps you could consider given them a call or leaving a message on their answer phone with the questions you have on your mind at the moment. You are also welcome to ring our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to talk things through with you.

We have detailed information too on our website on advanced bowel cancer which may answer some of the questions you may have. You can read more about it here

I hope this helps a little and that you will hear from some of our members who have also looked after a loved one with terminal bowel cancer. It helps to talk to others who are or have been in the same boat.

    Best wishes,
