Waiting for Ovarian cancer diagnosis

Hi,

My mum is 65 and we're waiting for diagnosis. We already know almost for certain it's cancer but still waiting for the biopsy result to confirm it. It seems like it's just waiting, waiting, waiting, and while we've been waiting (she went to the doctors early January), she's gone from being fine to really poorly.

She's just come out of hospital where she went in after passing out, to have fluid drained, blood, another biopsy because they missed the first one, and a semi permanent chest drain. All just treating the side effects. She can't eat a lot, she's tired all the time and sleeps a lot, just washing her hair finishes her off for the day. And nothing is actually being done to treat the cancer yet!

Is all this waiting normal? I feel like while we're waiting the cancer is just growing and spreading unstopped and that her chances of coming out the other end of this are lowering. We know it's already at least spread to somewhere in the abdomen.

  • That must feel awful.

    Waiting is stressful.

I'm waiting for a biopsy result as well, but it was only on monday and only a small mouth lump.

  • Hope you get good results for yours

  • No not yet, they could not give me timescale and nice nurses on here advised me on phone that this inability to give timescale is due to corona.

They suggested I wait 3 weeks, so another fortnight.

  • [@Jane32]‍  Thank you, hope yours works out too.

  •  Hi Jane,

Firstly I am so sorry, I fully understand your plight.

I can only give you some indication of my mums timeline as she was diagnosed with stage two cancer from the Oncologist examination only 6 weeks ago and to follow since receiving an MRI and CAT scan the results are now saying stage 4.

Mum kept having cancelations on her MRI and CAT scans by texting her phone, equally at the last minute Mum was asked to come in due to a cancellation on both scans. So be prepared to go at a drop of a hat.

We are in an end of life situation and barely got the news of cancer less than two months ago. The Oncologist said on the phone we should get a phone call from the MacMillon Nurse. Everything feels like we are walking though treacle and very little immediate help is available. We are walking blindly without help it feels upto now and fending for ourselves.

SO my advice In your Mums case you need immediate assistance. Call them again and again to get this thing moving, let them know Mum is available for any cancellation and let them know again howyou’re your mum is as she needs help now. NOT when COVID is over. Cancer won’t wait for you.

My love your Mum and your family.

  • Hi

sorry about your mum her story similar to mine I went in hospital had fluid drained biopsies twice then they said they couldn't really get enough from the sample although the tumour on my ovary . Went to Christie's for pre op assessment for open surgery however I'm not fit enough to have surgery my lungs apparently so now I'm waiting and waiting . Got a call last week saying they want to do another biopsy at Christie's no app as yet .. mine has been going on since January I'm weak can't eat much so tired so I fully understand your mums pain hope you hear soon x

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your mum.

Thank you for the advice, I've been on the phone to mums keyworker once asking whats going on and I will be again if necessary. It just seems like everything is taking way longer than it maybe needs to.

  • It sounds like your situation is really similar to my mums, she has a chest drain now and I'm worried that problem might prevent surgery.

Sorry you feel so unwell. Hope things get moving for you soon.
