Starting Chemotherapy

Hello,

my mum is due to start chemotherapy on Friday 10th April (all being well!). She has a Hickman line fitting on Tuesday in preparation.
she has already had a mastectomy and full axillary node clearance back in January, where her surgeon had said they had removed all traces of cancerous tissue (all scans previous to surgery were clear of any spread)   She was due to start chemo at the beginning of March to "mop up" any cells that may be wandering around but just days before, she caught a nasty sepsis-like infection in her arm that has lymphodema from a previous cancer operation 16 years ago  she has recovered from that now thank goodness and all being well we are ready for treatment next week

I am completely paranoid about her starting chemotherapy during the CO-VID outbreak. We are taking all precautions we can (gloves, masks, hand washing, antibac-Ing etc.). Our household is self-isolating and has been for 3 weeks, which we will continue to do until my mum finishes her treatment.
The hospital where My Mum is receiving treatment is also taking all precautions (no visitors allowed in to accompany patients to appointments, temperature checking before entering hospital etc.)

is there anything else that we can do on top of the above to prevent my Mum becoming unwell? I'm worried that if my Mum becomes unwell, NOT due to COVID but from side effects from chemotherapy, she will not be able to access medical care in hospital if she needs it.

also, my Mums original chemotherapy plan was to have 6 rounds of FEC-T treatment (3 rounds just FEC then the T added in for the last 3 rounds). Her treatment has been reduced down to just 4 sessions in total now. Has this happened to anyone else?

sorry for the long post. I have driven myself crazy thinking of outcomes and possible problems, I think I need some reassurance and to hear from people who have had/are going through chemotherapy during this crazy pandemic. Thanks so much! Xxx

  • It sounds like you're doing a great job at taking all the necessary precautions to ensure your mum's safety Roo but I just thought I'd give you our cancer nurses telephone number so you can have a chat with them about this. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members who are in a similar situation will share their advice and experiences with you soon as well.

Wishing your mum all the best for Friday Roo.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Roo1991, it's a scary time for all receiving treatment but everyone is doing their best to avoid infection.  When my husband had chemotherapy the hospital had a dedicated cancer ward so you were more protected and also a private waiting room.  I understand how stressful it is but everyone will be careful with your Mum and will do their utmost for her.  Take care, Carol x
