Radical nephrectomy recovery

Hi all,

My mum (a fit and healthy 62 year old) had a radical nephrectomy (L shaped wound) three days ago to remove a kidney with an 11cm mass with left vein invasion. The doctor said at diagnosis that the cancer had not spread, but I am still confused at what the growth into the vein means and would appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through it. They said that there would be no radio/chemo after the surgery as it would be ineffective and that surgery should solve everything.

The surgeon said the op had gone to plan immediately after but there has been no news since then.

In terms of recovery from the op, today is not good. She has been sick and is still in awful pain.

It has been a torturous almost six weeks of waiting from  diagnosis to surgery and it is awful seeing her in so much pain in hospital.

I would really appreciate hearing from someone who has been through this procedure and come out the other side.

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Anthony and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I've had a quick look through the forum for you and found that [@Lynsired]‍ had this operation back in October and is happy to help others in a similar situation so fingers crossed they will pop on when they can to share their experiences and advice with you.

You're welcome to give our cancer nurses a call about this as well. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope this helps and your mum's recovery starts to improve soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Anthony

Sorry to hear about your Mum, but sounds like she just needs to rest and heal. I think veins are often involved in the surgery and mine had invaded my liver so still not quite out of the woods. I am 66 and I cycled 10 miles this morning and generally feel pretty good. I had my surgery last October. The pain does last for a few weeks.  Give my best to your Mum and take care of yourself Lynsired.

  • Hi Lynsired,

Thanks so much for getting back in touch - it's very kind of you.

I'm so pleased to hear that your surgery went well and hope everything goes well with the rest of treatment. Fantastic that you're back to being active after such big surgery.

My mum seems to have turned a corner today and she may be out tomorrow (after six days).

Thanks again for getting in touch.

  • Thanks very much for this, Steph. Much appreciated.

  • Hi Lynsired

It is now three weeks since my mum's op and she is recovering well. She's moving a lot better and is getting stronger every day. In the last few days she's tried to stop taking the liquid morphine completely but is still in quite a lot of pain. I was just wondering how long the pain and discomfort continued for you? I didn't mention that her's was an open radical nephrectomy rather than laparoscopic. Was yours open too? Most things I've read seem to be laparoscopic so it's quite hard to find people with experience of the open op.

    Hope you are doing well.

  • Hi Anthony glad to hear your Mum is making progress, Like your Mum I had an open radical nephrectomy. I was in pain in various ways for about 3 months. I couldn't take morphine as I was allergic to it, so I persisted with paracetamol. It was never really bad, new movement created new bits of pain.
I am completely fine now though having immunotherapy for some cancer left behind in my liver.
To put this in perspective I cycled 10 miles today for my exercise and I am 66! Please feel free to ask anything I found it difficult to get some information.

    Take care Lynsi

  • Seems though that I do repeat myself!!

  • Thanks so much for getting in touch again. It's so useful to hear from someone who's been through it. She has had a really good day today, we've been for a little walk and she's walking much quicker. It's just the odd minor set back in terms of some days the pain being worse but she is doing very well. She has her follow up appointment in four weeks and then the scan to check it hasn't gone anywhere after having been in the vein 3-6 months post surgery.

Wishing you all the best for your immunotherapy and thank you again for taking the time to reply.
