Dad has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer

I posted in January that dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on 13th December last year. There were no symptoms up to now but things seem to have changed. Dad is a very private person and likes to hide what is wrong but he has suddenly stopped eating his normal food and now has soup that has been sieved so its just a clear liquid. He also had to call the paramedics out because he couldnt breathe the one night, but they said his oxygen levels were ok. We think the tumor has grown. Dad looks so ill and frail, he is 86 but at the end of the day he is my dad.

  • Hello Dodd

I'm sorry to hear that Dad's situation has deteriorated recently. It can be difficult when someone you love chooses to keep things to themselves and it's natural that you're feeling worried.

I know when you posted previously you mentioned that other than carers, it was just yourself and your sister taking care of your Dad. Is that still the case? Does he have any other health professionals visiting him at home or has he seen a Dr recently?
If not then it may be worth talking gently to Dad and asking if he would like to be reviewed by a Dr or nurse. It may be that they are able to make things easier for him.

If you'd like to speak to someone for some support then don't forget you can call our team of nurses. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Sending best wishes,
