Whipple procedure worth it for Pancreatic cancer?

My mom who is 74 has pancreatic cancer which is resectable so she is a candidate for the Whipple procedure.

She has had 4 rounds of chemo and ended up in hospital twice with infection which was hard enough.

My question is at her age is it worth going through this major operation even if it is the only option?
She only has the doctors advice and I want to give her the best information I can.

Thanks
Kerry

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Kerry although I'm sorry that your mom has been having a difficult time with her treatment.

I hope some of our members who have had the whipple procedure will share their thoughts and experiences with you soon but you're more than welcome to join in on any discussions you find about this when using the 'search forum' option in the blue bar above.

It may also be worth getting involved with the online community on the Pancreatic Cancer UK website as well.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi Kerry I was 45 when I had my wipple I was in hospital for 6 weeks in theatre 5 times after I got out I ended up with 3 large hernias that I could sit my arms on and ended up being  opened up again to get mesh fitted. I dont want to tell you if it is worth it or not but for the last 5 or 6 years I really struggle with pain so much so I quite often sit in my room and cry. As I said in post with the love of my family I'm still. But good luck to your mum whatever she does.

  • Hi Gazza,

Thanks for your response and I'm sorry to hear what a rough time you have had with this procedure. Ultimately the decision is my moms and I have heard from so many people what a long road to recovery it is but I guess when you faced with only one decision you will most likely take it. If we stay positive hopefully she will have a good recovery. Thanks again Kerry

  • Please tell your mum good luck and I'm sure in time she will be fine.
