Stage 4 lung cancer

Hi, I've not used one of these sites before but am looking for people who have had similar experiences to give a realistic life expectancy. My dad is 65 and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018. He had chemo to shrink the tumour and then a full lung removed November 18 was told cancer free. The following year in July 2019 after back pain they found cancer eroding his spine. They had to put a cage in his spine to stop it collapsing and did radiotherapy in Oct 19. He was due to start chemo in Nov 19 but was told the biopsy from the spinal tumour didn't look like lung cancer- pos bowel cancer. Though he had no bowel cancer symptoms and had sent annual sample that had come back clear- the chemo was put on hold to do a pep scan and biopsy. 1 week before the results were due back on the 3rd Jan 2020 he lost movement in his left side and we took him to hospital. They found a tumour in his brain  that had been bleeding.  They scheduled radiotherapy on brain  for 22nd Jan . On  19th jan we had to take him back in due to further weakness now on the right side. They found this time the cancer on his spine has grown and claim it wasn't on the scan only weeks before.  They have done a further high risk radiotherapy treatment in attempt to keep mobility though there is a possibility it could have adverse effects.  Doctors so far when asked for prognosis say lesser side if a yearl. Has anyone experienced this ? He has no other family except me and my sister and is hard trying to manage getting up to see him and all the appointments along with work and young children . We are trying to get him home but don't know how will mange caring for him as don't know how quick he could deteriorate.  If we thought it would be a shorter time we could arrange time off work but can't do that indefinitely.  Is very hard

  • Hi I’m so very sorry to hear what your dad has gone through and I know how hard it must be for you and your sister, have you been offered any help/support from McMillan nurses if not try and seek their help. Can I ask did your dad have any chemotherapy after his lung was removed. My husband had two lines of his right lung removed last February they said it was all gone but still followed it up with chemotherapy his first follow up appointment is next month I have my fingers crossed for good news.

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply, he didn't have treatment after as they removed the whole lung. I am concerned as when they put chemo on hold in november investigate the bowel - which came back clear actually- when I ask about consequences of not doing it then they said there was no urgency. Evidently there was as it's now grown so quick to almost paralyse him. He is very proud and for now is able to walk and limited movement in his arms . We are trying to get a stair lift fitted so he can go home and they said they can arrange carers but will take a few weeks. I hope good news for your husband but please tell him not to leave anything - anything out of the ordinary or slight twinge, get it checked x

  • Hi Beena

so sorry to hear about your dad, it's very distressing . please get in touch with his doctor who will organise immediately for  the district nurses to come out and take care of his needs. Or get in touch with the local hospice who may also do ' hospice at home'  care.

They are amazing;  it will eleveate some of the stress and answer some of your questions.  Hope  your dad get his 'care plan'  set up soon. That's The first step required!
