Bowel Cancer - Bleeding Scar Tissue - Should we be concerned

Hi all,

about 2 years ago my dad was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. He had radio and chemo were the tumour shrunk greatly and then had surgery to remove it. He had one last round of chemo to 'air on the side of caution' (his oncologists words) - his oncologist didn't believe it to be essential but my dad didn't want to take the risk and had the last round of it anyway.

Since then, life has resumed back to normal but recently he noticed he had some rectal bleeding again. He saw a consultant who did a colonoscopy and said he belived it to be scar tissue from my dads previous surgery and in his opinion, he didn't believe my dad had anything to worry about. My dad recieved a call yesterday telling him he has an MRI scan tomorrow afternoon which has now concerned me greatly. Are they doing an MRI scan because they believe that actually the cancer has returned or are they doing one simply just to check the scar tissue etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Alice xx

  • Hello Alice,

How did the MRI scan go? Did they tell you more about it? I think it's good that they did an MRI scan just to be totally sure and to look at things in detail. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is cause for concern. I am keeping everything crossed that it was all just linked to the scar tissue.

Keep us updated if you get a chance. I hope you won't have to wait too long to find out more. If you ever needed to talk to one of our nurses about it, you can reach them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
