Lung cancer at 91

During a ct scan my grandmother was told she has lung cancer, she is not going to recieve any treatment. I have taken time out of work to be with her, we wonder what  her life expectancy will be.   We are taking one day at a time and will be with each other every day. I'm hopeing she will not suffer too much pain.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother having lung cancer . My mother was recently diagnosed at 89 with same condition  based on CT scan . She does not want further investigation and is under palliative care . As for life expectancy my  was given 6 months back in early October 2019. She is sleeping more and is weak but can still mobilise . Alas she has moderate dementia which for some strange reason mu  seems more lucid and alert . My sister and I have both given up work to be with her and alternate care.  She has no cough but has very poor appetite and has lost about a stone within the last two months. She does report occasional pain to chest and sickness at times when eating and drinking , but the saddest part is that her spirit has gone and she is fed up as was always very outgoing well into 80 s . She has compromised mobility through the dementia which has affected her mobility and weights no more than 6 stone (40kg)  I choose not to second d guess life expectancy as she has good days and bad days. Consultant says she has  metastic cancer to her liver and spine but uses the word "likely" "probable" based on scan reading.  I personally have found little support in any of the NICE UK guidelines for patients and caregivers from any of the services deployed the only people ask after me and  my sister are from the care call we have in place , and they sound like they are under valued by their managers . I be got to say after 20 years of working within social work adult care I am glad I was financially able to quit work a d have this time with my mum. I may have lost friends in the process but you only have one mum. I would love to  make new friendships in Hampshire but it's easier said than done when in your 50's . Also I fin d the anticipatory grief over losing my mum affects my ability to feel upbeat and sociable  as its very sad witnessing the person fade before your eyes .

    Kind regards David

  • Thanks David for commenting, I lost my mother to breast cancer, in 2008 today's dateI've been to the cemetery and now im with her mother (My grandmother) who now has lung cancer.

I am 42 my Nan is 91 im careing for my Nan as there is no older adult above me. I'm trying my best but it's depressing but I won't show my nan that I'm down, she has is the one who has the cancer, I'm here to be by her side and do as she asks.

I know what your going through, it's heart breaking, we attend my nans hospital appointment soon for her first general assessment, what ever that means, but we have been told she won't be recieveing treatment.
