Chemo - what would she need?

Hello,

I hope someone can help guide me. Unfortunately, my mother has her battle now. She will be undergoing chemo and her surgery in the next two weeks.

I am trying to prepare the home and what she would need in hospital. (Do I need bed pads?, disinfectant, ice packs for cooling skin  etc etc)

This might seem unusual but I need to get prepared and don't what to rush about to the shops at last minute notice.

Thank you very much in advance x

  • Hi

I am not an expert on these things but saw your post and just thought I would share what we did for my husband when he went in for chemo.  There are so many different chemotherapy drugs targetted for personal patient's needs but the very best person to talk with will be the team caring for your Mum.

The first time we went to my husband's chemo session we were given lots of information and they were more than happy to explain things to us and respond to our queries.  Perhaps make a list of questions and write down the answers (it is easy to forget  when there is a lot to take in).  My husband received his chemo via  a drip but sometimes it is given in tablet form.  When my husband was at the day ward for his chemo they provided everything he needed there and he did not need anything special at home during that time.  Should there be any side effects then tell your Mum's medical team and they may be able to help with these.  If your Mum is going to a day ward it is a nice idea to take something along with her to keep amused such as book/music or maybe a pack of cards if she is going tohave someone with her.  My husband dozed quite a bit but was also able to go to the patient lounge and watch tv if he wanted to.  Hope this helps a little and if you have further questions then maybe a call to the nurses on this forum would also help.(There is a contact number at the bottom of the page if you are in theUK).
