Rollercoaster - mum diagnosed with small cell lung cancer

Morning everyone.

My mum, age 63 was diagnosed with stage 3 sclc in june 2019 the cancer has not spread out with the right lung but has to the the nodes within the lung. I have read this is not stage 3 but was told it was by the dr. My mum is so well I dont understand, she has had 4 cycles chemo with no I'll health and radical radiotherapy 20 days and again very limited illness which of course I am very thankful for. The chemo had shrunk the tumour by half the size. Now it's the waiting game as all therapy has stopped and I'm finding it very hard to work all this out in my head, how can someone so well be told they are so ill. Has any one experienced complete cure at this stage. How do I know what's going on has the radiation killed it all or is it now just growing again. Doctors say they will not scan again till march time, which seems like a life time away.

Thanks xxx

  • Hello Dream19,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear about your mum and can understand that her appearing would be confusing given her diagnosis. Cancer and its treatments can affect people differently and hopefully after the scan in March you'll know more about whether the treatment has worked. I'd suggest you monitor how she's doing until then and let her medical team know if anything changes, you'll be surprised how quickly March will come around. It's great to hear that her tumour has shrunk and she seems to be in good spirits.

    All the best,
