Shadows on liver following kidney cancer

Hello all

my mum has her kidney removed in March this year following a tumour being found. She was told the cancer was stage three due to the size but had not spread any where else and did not need any treatment. She had her first ct scan in September and the results came back in December to say she has three shadows on her liver and needs an MRI. Firstly has this happened to anybody else? Is there a possibility this could be nothing? If the cancer has spread to the liver what is the likely prognosis?

  • Hi Gemma and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry about your mum's diagnosis and what's been found on her first CT scan. Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their experiences with you soon but our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you would like to talk things through with them as well.

I'm going to include a link to the section we have on our website about kidney cancer for you to have a look at as it includes information on advanced kidney cancer, but fingers crossed that won't be the case.

Wishing your mum all the best with her MRI.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear your mum has had to go through that.

Reading your post you were in the same position I'm in now.

Oct 2019 my mum had been treated for a bladder infection that after pushing for Investigations turned out to be kidney cancer. She had her left kidney removed in Feb this year. During surgery they found her lymph nodes in the area to be inflamed so took them, tests showed some signs of cancer in them. Due to complications in surgery she also had to have her spleen removed. Now all follow up scans have been clear but then 2 weeks ago she's had severe signs of gallstones that her Dr brushed off! A week ago she had to be taken to a+e by ambulance.

After a million tests they've found no gallstones, said it's her liver causing issues but discovered shadows on her liver.

I'm so angry at how they could have been missed!

They have said don't panic it could be something other than cancer but have so far failed to say what it could be if not that.

She's now waiting on a MRI and we are fearing the worst.

Please could I ask what happened with your mum?

    Can it be nothing?

Any idea of what comes next?
