Dad has brain mets from renal cell carcinoma

Hi

My dad has a kidney removed 4 years ago, the year after his adrenal gland, the year after a lump on his chest. This year he has a tumor pressing on a nerve in his brain. He went fo Gamma Knife radiotherapy on Friday and they found another tumour due to the better imaging on that MRI machine. In the oast 4 weeks he's gone from working full time doing 12 hour shifts in a factory, looking after my Mum with advanced MS and doing school runs for my son 11 with autsim. What a hero. He's now in bed, in pain, very naseous, dont know whether from the Gamma Knife or the cancer. He had had 5 A and E admissions in 4 weeks, 2 this weekend, one more admision maybe today as the GP has given him injection for nausea but he still cant keep even water down. A lot of it is also worry and panic and also extreme pain. He has barely slept or eaten in 4 weeks now. He is only 61. What can I ask to be done to get rid of the pain and nausea just for a bit - I heard it can take weeks for the gamma knife to take effect and he cant carry on like this :(

  • Hi YorkshirePudding,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to read what you're going through at the moment - I can only imagine how hard this must be.

In terms of your question, unfortunately I'm not able to advise and it would be best to discuss this with your dad's consultant. I'm sure you're doing all you can to support him, and just make sure you ask any questions you have to the consultant so that you can be as fully informed as possible.

If you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Look after yourself too, and wishing you all the best,
