Missed chemotherapy

I'm new to this group so I'm hoping that someone can give me a bit of advice. My dad was diagnosed with terminal bile duct cancer last month and has recently started his chemo. He has been coping so well with his treatment and receives chemo on a Tuesday for 3 consecutive weeks with then a week off.

Last week his liver function levels were raised slightly, so he almost didnt get his chemo, but today they were still raised and he didn't get his chemo.

I'm very new to all this and am really worried about how his treatment will continue if these levels continue to be raised.  Any advice from anyone in a similar situation would be so so appreciated xxxxx

  • Hi Dizzy, because chemo affects your body there are certain level that have to be right for the patient to be able to cope.  My husband had anaemia during his and couldn't have his next dose until a blood transfusion had been done, however the chemo keeps on working for some time after being given so missing a few days would be OK but if he's too weak to take it then they will discuss this with him.  The NHS are very much on the ball regarding treatment so their advice is the best to follow.  I hope he is soon back on track.  Carol

  • Hello Dizzy and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your dad. I can understand that having to delay chemotherapy must be disappointing for you both. But I don't think the doctors have any option but to delay treatment until his liver function has recovered sufficiently for him to have the next course of treatment.  Giving chemotherapy in this situation, can be potentially dangerous, and cause life threatening complications.

Doctors always have to weigh up the potential benefits and risks of treatment because of these potential side effects.

I hope that this explains things a little more, and I that your dad is able to restart his chemotherapy soon.
