End stage symptoms

Hi, my father was diagnosed with advanced small cell lung cancer on 13th November this year, and we were told he has weeks to months at best.

He has already lost a great deal of weight, has an awful cough and whistle, and his throat is very painful. When diagnosed we were told it was in the lymph nodes up his throat.

Already, he cannot sleep due to the coughing and spluttering (it doesn't sound like a real cough as it's weak but full if that makes sense). Now he feels like there is something stuck in his throat and he is struggling to swallow

He is very stubborn and hates doctors. Does this sound like it has already gone into his throat? Does anyone know if there is anything that can make it less troublesome for him?

  • Hi WKH,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to read about your father. I hope you're getting on OK but I can only imagine how difficult this is at the moment.

In terms of your questions, unfortunately I'm not able to advise and it's normally best to speak with your father's doctor about these things.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with our nurses, and if so you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Otherwise, if anyone here has any similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
