Oesophageal cancer

It's been 3 months since my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 oesophageal cancer. Because of her age, 93 yrs, surgery and chemotherapy weren't an option for her. She's refused radiotherapy and is just receiving palliative care. She's getting frail and only thing she can eat is smooth porridge. She's such a strong woman and won't open up to how she's feeling emotionally or physically.
I really have no idea how this awful disease will progress. I love her so much and don't want her to be in pain and suffer needlessly. Thanks for reading it's really helpful just to write it all down

  • I'm really glad writing everything down is helping you at this difficult time Malbrook.

Hopefully some of our members who have supported their loved ones on this cancer journey will share their advice and experiences with you soon but I hope this section on our website will help you to figure out what signs to look out for as the cancer progresses.

I know there isn't much I can say or do that will make this any easier but I want you to know that you are not alone and that our community are here for you.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi and very sorry your mother has this disgusting disease.

I lost my dad to this terrible cancer in September, he was diagnosed on July and was Stage 4 , it is the most horrific thing I have ever seen im sorry to say.

My dad was a very fit and active 69 year old who never smoked or drank and walked everywhere .

I will be haunted for life watching him suffer and die , I hope your mum does not suffer like my dad did .

    Good luck.

  • Many thanks for your message of support. It means a lot to know I'm not alone. My mother has had a good long life and I'm lucky to have had her in my life for so long. Like your father my mother isn't a smoker and before the diagnosis she was fit and healthy with no other medical problems. Until recently she was an avid walker and still lives and manages her own home.

its awful seeing her shrink before my eyes. But she's still got her sense of humour joking that 8 stone is her ideal weight!
