Cholangiocarcinoma- My mum the whipple warrior

My mum had her Whipple procedure on the 9th July this year, for a T3 Cholangiocarcinoma that then attached to the head of her pancreas. She spent a lengthy time in hdu .. my mum has SLE and APS- a long recovery time was inevitable really. She got home the end of August/ beginning of September I am sure. Initially she had 4 drains for a leak.. as-well as developing a blood clot part in parcel of having APS but also due to receiving TPN and lipids via a Picc line. We are now 4 months post op (or just shy of it). Unfortunately her margins are unclear meaning now she has moderate differentiated adenocarcinoma cells within the pancreas, is this (unfortunately) normal? She has not been fit enough for treatment yet.. she was not eligible for the trial due to recovery time and also due to her being on life long warfrin. She developed and abscess under one of her drains due to a further leak. She went back into theatre on the 15th August to have it drained and a larger drain inserted. She still suffers from vomiting and keeping food down due to DGE I guess?
Small glimmer of hope on the 18th of this month she had her last drain removed and her wound now seems to be healing! We have an appointment tomorrow to see if she is fit enough for treatement.. my questions really..
Are there any ways of coping when your loved one is unsure about having treatment.
I feel it’s a fight against an invisible clock- Prognosis being poor
Does the adenocarcinoma cells within the pancreas mean that if untreated it will develop into Panc CA?
Anyone else experiencing the rocky roads and awaiting some smoother travels with this horrible beast?

Thank you for your time, and any help would be genuinely appreciated
xx

  • Hi Sunshinexo,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry no-one got to your post sooner. In terms of your medical questions, I'm unfortunately unable to help and these sorts of questions are really best answered by your mum's doctor.

There will certainly be many others on this forum experiencing a similar situation in terms of looking after loved ones going through something similar. Hopefully others will be along here soon, but if not do feel free to browse the forum for other discussions.

I see that yesterday was the appointment so I hope that it went as well as possible.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
