Throat and tonsil cancer, how can I get my Dad to eat again?

Two and half weeks ago my Dad who is 79, finished 7 weeks of intensive radio therapy treatment for throat and tonsil cancer. He was brilliant through the treatment, very determined to fight it and did all he could to resist going ontot he feeding tube, until he absolutely had to in the last week of treatment. However since finishing treatment he says he cannot eat anything at all as its too painful and seems to think the feeding tube is his answer to everything.  I know he hates the fact that he cant taste anything but I am concerned that he has lost his spirit to get better and he is losing weight fast.  I dont want to pressure him into eating if it hurts, but I know he needs more than just ensure, has anyone got any ideas of what food we can try that might have a bit of taste, I think that would help him as he loved his food before all this started. Be glad to hear especially from people who have had this cancer themselves. Thanks a worried daughter.

  • Hi ya ...

So sorry your going through this heartbraking time at the moment... your poor dad ... but he seems to know what he wants , a feed tube .. I can quite understand your dad ... he may have had a good apitite and love his food ... but the surgery he's had has left him with no taste ... which makes food blan ... so to him he'd rather have the tube ...

I know you'd love to see him eat .. but asking the cancer patient what they want and supporting it, will give your dad a little control .. where cancer takes that away ... but you sound an amazing daughter / son and you should be very proud of yourself ... Chrissie xx

  • Thank you for your kind words - Dad managed some rice pudding today, so as I say - small steps!
