Hello Bernadette and welcome to the forum.
I'm really sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's not as uncommon as some people may think and we do have some information about cancer of unknown primary on our website here that might be of help to you.
If it would help you to talk to someone then you can call our team of nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
Keep in touch Bernadette and let us know how both you and Mum are doing.
Best wishes,

Dear Bernadette70, my husband got diagnosed with cancer in march2017. He presented with a swollen lymph node to collarbone area bottom of neck, under arm and upper chest and from there our cancer journey started. He had an extensive search for the primary, many different types of scans and biopsies but unfortunately they never found the primary. He finally got the diagnosis of CUP i.e. cancer unknown primary, three months after his initial diagnosis of cancer and started treatment straight after. The search for the primary was one of the hardest times during our journey as we had never heard of having cancer but not been able to identify the primary. However although it was a hard time we understood why it was so necessary to try and find the primary. He has exceeded medical expectations and although incurable currently stable. I hope you and your mum get some answers soon. Good luck
