Advice on Flot chemo

My husband has oesophageal and stomach cancer and is just having his 4th lot of chemo. I was told by a MacMillan nurse that they cannot delay his surgery any longer than 8 weeks after his chemo is finished because FLOT only stuns the tumour, his tryebus thus please, especially as I expected the chemo to kill the cancer off. Would be grateful for people’s comments

  • Hello Mariey,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat!

I hope your husband's 4th lot of chemotherapy treatment is going well. Others who have had the FLOT combination treatment will hopefully be along shortly to share their experiences with you. There is some detailed information on FLOT chemotherapy here. I thought I would mention a few past threads on the subject which may be of interest to you and I hope this will help you connect with others who have had this treatment before. Read for example [@Sonnygirl48]‍ 's thread here and feel to respond if you wish - you will see there are others there who are or have been in a similar place. [@Skinns49]‍ 's thread here might also be of interest to you.

You can also give our cancer nurses a call about this on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m they will be happy to try and answer any questions you may have.

I hope this helps and that you get some answers on this very soon.

Best wishes and best of luck to your husband for his treatment. I hope it will all go well for him and that the surgery will be a success.

  • Hi my husband has stage 3 oesophagus cancer. He had the op 6 weeks after finishing flot chemo. The surgeon was non committal on whether or not it had shrunk the tumour. We are now waiting for post op chemo to start.

Good luck with your husbands treatment

  • Hello

Thank you for your response and pleased to hear that your husband is two thirds through his process, here's to him starting his chemo again very shortly. Do you know whether they managed to remove all the cancer through the surgery, if so presumably this next lot of chemo is to make sure nothing is left behind.

He is having his CT scan done today in readiness for the MDM team to see the results, our appointment with Oncologist is next week to decide the next step.

whilst I appreciate it is difficult for our husbands, are you finding it a difficult path for you also. I am struggling with the Unknown!

    kind regards

  • Hi

My husband is hoping the feedtube will be removed. Our next appointments are on the 1st and second of Oct. Where hopefully we will get a more in depth results if his operation. Unfortunately when they removed the cancer he didn't have clear margins.  Which means the cancer was found up to the edge of the area removed. His stage was moved up slightly from 3b before the op to 3c after surgical op biopsies. Hopefully his chemo will restart in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

My husband sailed through pre op chemo, however everybody is different.

It is really hard being the partner of someone going through cancer treatment. A cancer diagnosis effects us as partners just as hard as the patient themselves,  just in a different way.

    Wishing you all the best

    Caroline

  • My fingers will be crossed for your husband for 1st/2nd October when his feed tube will be removed, and hopefully he is given a date for his post chemo to start, how long ago was his op?

Trevor has had a few nasty symptoms through his chemo but strangely enough hasn't lost his hair and fortunately has not suffered with sickness or nausea, so here's hoping the tumour in his oesophagus has shrunk enough for him to be put forward for chemo. He sadly has cancer in the top of his stomach plus a couple of lymph nodes also, fingers crossed they take it all out. He is due to have his surgery in London.

It would be great to keep in touch with you if you don't mind

    kind regards. Marie x

  • My husband had few problems with pre op chemo. He has lost a lot of weight post op. His cancer was at the ge junction and in 7 lymph nodes. He didn't get clear margins so is at high risk if recurrence. We will know more after appointments next week.

My concern is if my husband will manage all the post op chemo.

Good luck with your husband. Chemo really improved my husbands appetite.
