Post treatment pain, stage 4 bowel cancer

My husband was diagnosed May 2018, bowel, lymph nodes and liver. He's been through 7 chemo sessions followed by 6 week's of daily radiotherapy combined with chemo. In January he had a liver resection, 2 month's later a low anterior resection and ileostomy which was reversed a month ago. All of this has left him with extreme pain, mostly nerve, throughout his body. He is also completely exhausted and feel's that he can't fight it any longer. Has anyone else experienced this please? Does it gradually get better? I want to help but feel so helpless.

  • Hello Mustang,

I'm very sorry to hear about everything your husband has been through over the past 18 months. With three major surgeries on top of his chemo and radiotherapy and now living with constant pain it's understandable that he's feeling so completely exhausted at the moment.

Has his pain management been discussed with his Consultant or your GP? If he is on pain relief then it may be that a review is appropriate to try and get things better controlled. Or it could be that a referral to another specialist or team is needed.

Can I suggest that you give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they'll be able to talk things through with you and give you some advice and support on how best to go forwards with trying to get your husbands pain management sorted. You can give them a call on  0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that things improve soon.

    Best wishes,
