Any advice would be very much appreciated.......

Evening everyone,

My Grandad has been diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma of the underarm. It has been going on now for about three months now with no treatment only trips back and forth for MRI scans, biopsy etc.

We are now waiting to here back from his latest scan which was on 22nd of July to see what if any treatment of radiology he can have?

The Sarcoma has grown now massively in size, around the size of a grapefruit and the pain is getting quite intense for him.

My questions are, is it normal for the process to be so long winded or is it because in ( my opinion) he is 92 years old and therefore not priority?

Also which pain relief should he have? At the moment he has been given Co-codemol to take but to be honest it really isn't helping anymore now.

I have left messages with his Sarcoma clinical Nurse but yet to hear back, his GP says it is up to the hospital and there is nothing she can do to help.

I fully understand his age is against him and he has a had a life fully lived, I would like to know if there is nothing to be done then please tell him\ us,.

Should there be a care plan put in place and if so when and by whom?

Has anybody been in this situation or similar that could please give me some advice or point me in the direction?

Thank you

  • I'm sorry to read about your granddad Helen, this must be very frustrating for you all.

Hopefully some of our members who have experience of soft tissue sarcoma or been on similar journeys with their loved ones will pop by soon for a chat.

I do hope you hear back from your granddad's sarcoma nurse soon but whilst you wait you're more than welcome to discuss his situation with our cancer nurses. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I'm not sure if you've come across them already but it may be worth getting in touch with the Sarcoma UK as well.

Best wishes to you both at this difficult time.

  • Hi Helen so sorry to hear about your situation. My dad was 87 when diagnosed with lung cancer. It was made more difficult because he lived in Jamaica we did try to pursuade him to come home to uk.

Anyway-before his diagnosis there were lots of back and forth for tests. He was given an appointment for an overnight stay for 3 days and this is when I arrived. We asked and recieved a sit down chat with the consultant who we grilled on nutrition, treatment, time left ect-asked her about treatment and age but a friend of ours is also a doctor so we had that answer before we asked. Plus dad did not want treatment to give him extra rtime to live uncomfortable). Had my sister not asked to speak to the consultant-surprisingly no one would have said more than hi to us.

There was nothing more to be done but what we wanted was clear instruction on what to expect:time frame, nutrion, treatment-why, when, side effects ect,  ect -I also got some answers in the UK from Macmillians also useful talk on respecting dads wishes. I would ask and don't take no for an answer to have a chat with the doctor, consultant in charge of your grandads care-have a list of questions prepared. We did have to sit/wait around for about an hour or two-as we appreciate they are busy people and all sorts crop up.

Macmillians had a nurse call me back-fantastic this alone may help in discussing illness, likely treatment, pain relief ect; best wishes and love to you and your loved ones
