Mum has newly diagnosed breast cancer

Hello

My Mum was last week diagnosed with breast cancer. Normal treatment would be a lumpectomy. sentinel lymph node removal and follow up radiation and then endocrine treatment but the consultant is pushing for just endocrine treatment as my mum has a form of (non-progressive) dementia: Korsakoff's syndrome. He says lack of ability to give consent means he oughtn't to operate.

NICE guideline on general anesthesia and breast cancer treatment suggest that "normal" treatment should be the surgery and, indeed, that's what my Mum was asking about in the initial consultation.

We're having a "best interests" meeting next week (there's no LPA but DOLS are in place because severe short term memory problems mean that she lacks capacity). I'm very concerned that he's made his mind up without properly considering all the options and am alarmed by his attitude.

  • Hi Willowgarden,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about Mum's diagnosis and the situation that you find yourselves in regarding the best way forward with her treatment.

It might be worth getting in touch with your local PALS service ahead of the meeting next week, they may be able to offer some advice. You might also like to consider giving our team of nurses a call to chat things through with them. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that the meeting goes well next week.

    Best wishes,
