Helpless

morning ,

i find myself here. My mum has cancer in her gullet , back , stomach and liver she has lost 7 and half stone . Not eating as she throws it straight back up .

She was only told 3 months ago that she would be lucky to make it til Christmas.

She had her second lot of chemo and Is really suffering . Every side affect apart from losing her hair , my step dad is beside himself . When I look at her I think she’s not going to be here for much longer .

What foods are best to take the metal taste away ?

At what point does my step dad contact the hospital?

And how do we tell my mums brother who is agoraphobic and has anxiety issues and lives in a warden run flat miles away that his sister is dying ?

My mum is 69 , beautiful person and doesn’t deserve this pain and suffering

  • Hi angelsliveamongus, so sorry about your mother I don't know for certain but when I had cemo the only things I could taste were the strong ones like curry and such try a small sample first to see if she can keep it down, all the rest tasted like cardboard, for drinks I found ginger ale went down best, wish your mum best wishes from us all on the forum

P.s have you thought of blending so it goes down easily,

  • Good morning . Thanks for the message . My dad has tried everything!!!! Stuff that he used to blend she can’t eat now and every time food goes near her mouth she retches . She’s having trouble swallowing her chemo tabs too . My dad thinks that she should go into hospital so they can intravenously give her nutrients . She’s just so weak ! It’s been two weeks since her chemo

  • I think you're dad is right for her own good if she can't eat properly she's going to get ill though not eating as well, the body needs nourishment to keep going remember the cemo won't help, good luck with whatever you choose, but think of your mother first,

  • Your lovely mum, ye are going through so much and are keeping strong, I know how hard it is to watch your loved one become weaker in front of your eyes. What I would say is, I think you are right, your lovely mum needs to get the nutrition into her or it’ll be hard to cope with then chemo. It’s already so tough on the system.

Our father has just gotten his second round of chemo also. His appetite is down since the last round also. I’ve been using MyFitnessPal app which tracks calories and nutrition. I usually make my Da custard and put non sugar icecream from Aldi in it, even when he doesn’t feel hungry, he eats it. It’s nice and light. Also the ensure drink every day (400 calories) and the 4 nutrition shots worth 100 calorie each with lots of nutrients are a life saver.

I’d say try get in contact with the nurse and get the nutrition under control. Don’t wait at all, hopefully they can perhaps give her nutrients or give your mum something to help give her an appetite.

In regard to her brother who already suffers with  anxiety, that’s a tricky one. Maybe tell him part of the news rather than the whole truth. It really is a difficult one. If you feel he won’t be able to cope, and you’ve already got your Mum as your main focus, do what’s okay for you and your family?

Thinking of you and your family, I will pray God gives you the strength to keep going as you are Xxxxx

  • Thank you for the message x   Mums in hospital now she couldn’t get up to go upstairs as she was too weak and hurt every time my dad touched her so they called an ambulance and had to wait 5 and half hours for one to come .

Shes on a drip , had xrays done , we will know what’s happening over the coming days

  • [@AngelsLiveAmongUs]‍  Your poor mum, sometimes hospital is the place to be, it’s so hard to cope on your own at home. Especially when it comes to pain. Please god they get the pain under control to help your mother feel more at ease, sounds like ye had a very tough time between seeing your mam like this and then waiting that long for an ambulance. I am thinking of your whole family!

  • Hi , went to see mum yesterday, she looks more comfortable than she was at home . She has a ct scam today so keeping everything crossed . On a positive note her body is fighting

  • Hi if you're mum is resting better and fighting that's a very good sign hope treatment soon shows signs of working soon, best wishes.
