Need to chat

My father is 84yrs, a good age, very proud and protective of me he has been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer .. Something beginning with m!  My mum and dad won't let me go to the hospital appointments with them ... I fear in not getting the facts and worry whether my dad is getting the right treatment.  Or even at what stage he s at, I know he's just trying to look out and protect me but as I'm the only one who can care for them i need to know, and don't know what to do. I have tried talking .. No good.   His symptoms are quickly getting worse please help

  • Hi Millyelly,

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis. It's only natural that you should be worried and concerned for your Dad, just as it's natural that they may be trying to protect you from being upset about things.

If your parents don't want you to attend the appointments with them, then I wonder if it may be worth asking if they would give his Consultant or GP permission to talk with you over the phone about Dad's diagnosis and the treatment he's receiving.

Would it be worth sitting down and speaking to your Dad on his own, or maybe having a chat with Mum and asking how you can support her whilst your Dad is going through this. Unfortunately you may find that they simply don't want or feel able to share all the information with you at the moment, and if that's the case then I'm sure that you'll do your best to support them both with the information that you do have.

If you'd like to chat to one of our nurses about your situation then do give them a call. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
