Mri results wait

Hi their my partner had breast cancer last year her2+ grade 2 stage 2a 3lymph nodes involved she's had a mastectomy and finished chemotherapy she's still on herceptin and tamoxifen and zoladex she suffered with a bad neck even before being diagnosed but recently has mentioned it to her gp who has sent her for an mri this was just over a week ago she's rang a to see if it's ready and they've said the provisional report is done but just waiting to be signed off now I was just wondering that if they had found something sinister would we already have been called back by now and also it wouldn't be waiting to be signed off they would treat it as matter of urgency also is it possible to have a reoccurrence while still on herceptin I feel for everybody who goes through this horrible disease I realy do I was just looking for a bit of reassurance thankyou

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear that your partner is receiving treatment for breast cancer, this must be a difficult time for you both.

Waiting for test results is very unsettling for patients and their families. I'm afraid it usually does take a couple of weeks for MRI results to come back, so try not to read too much into this for now. I'm sure they will be in touch as soon as they have the results to hand to explain what the scan shows.

It sounds like this neck pain was going on before she was diagnosed, so it is possible that this is unrelated to the cancer. It is very easy to think the worse but there could be a number of causes, so try not to worry.

You ask if it's possible to have a recurrence whilst on Herceptin. The drug Herceptin is a targeted treatment that attaches itself to the Her2 receptors on the cancer cells  to stop or slow down their growth.  Research has shown this drug to be very effective and has reduced the risk of the cancer coming back and increased the survival rates in women with this type of breast cancer. At the end of the day no one is able to know what the future will bring, the majority of breast cancers that do reoccur happen within the 5 years after treatment finishes. So I think it would be unlikely for this to be a recurrence.

I hope you know more soon. Please get back if you have more questions or if you would like to speak to one of the nurses do call on 0808 800 4040, we are here Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
