My mum has had a mastectomy

Hi Would just like to ask if anyone on this site knows anything about bleeding & complications after a mastectomy. My 79 year old mum had surgery yesterday (8-7-19) the Op went well, she felt very sick all day but by the evening she lost an enormous amount of blood, with clots and needed further surgery & a blood transfusion!! I’ve been told that this isn’t a common problem after mastectomy & I can’t find any other answers as to why this has happened!! Any advice or help would be great!!!

  • Hi there ..

Bless her .. how brave is your mum ..

I had a masectomy (total right) and lymph nodes taken... I have suffered with low blood pressure always .. so was kept in over night ... was fine after .. went back to ward .. but at 3 A.m knew something was not right .. called nurse, and she took my blood pressure and I was taken back to theatre as had a bleed inside .. lost lots of blood .. and came round and needed 3 blood transfusions ..

But slowly got everything back on track .. and that was 2017 .. two years ago this comming Saturday.. so yes it is really rare but it can happen .. but when it does we are in the best place , hospital ...

Hope your mum goes from strength to strength... slowly .. and baby steps ... she will need a lot of help now .. sounds like your a wonderful daughter ... Chrissie xx

  • Thank you so much for your reply, I’m sorry you went through all of that, I’m pleased to hear you got through it. We’ve heard from the hospital this morning that my mum’s BP is very low as well. It’s awful because she also had a couple of Lymph nodes taken out to be examined & she’s so worried about those results in case she needs further surgery!! Must try & be positive, thank you again for replying!! X
