Found out my dad has thermal cancer

I don’t really know where to start.

My dad has been poorly for a little while since being abroad and a week ago we were told he has cancer, 5 days later (4 days ago) we were told the cancer has spread to his lungs. They have said his expectancy is 12-18months. He is starting chemo hopefully in a week or so. To add to this I am in the early stages of pregnancy.

I can’t start crying. I already have a little girl who loves her Papa to bits and wonders where he is if he is outside or in bed (no energy). He currently has jaundice because of the tumour blocking the liver (stint inserted 2 weeks) ago and now waiting for this to go down then can start chemo to extent what time he has with us.

I am back at work tomorrow (couldn’t physical work Friday) but don’t care about anything else at the moment but my dad! I love him to bits and can’t believe what is happening, I know this happens to a lot of people but I never thought it was affect us this bad this quick!

Heart broke and don’t know what to do next. I don’t know if it’s hormones, this news, or everything!

  • Hello Danni - what an awful situation you & your family have found yourself in. It's so understandable that the only thing you can think about is your dad - why would you not?

You say you don't know what to do next & that's how we all feel in this kind of situation & I'm afraid there isn't an easy answer. All you can do is to be with your dad whenever you can & do whatever you can to make him comfortable. It's also important to give him the opportunity to talk about his feelings if he wants to &, if you can, tell him how much you love & appreciate him. Don't be afraid to show your feelings to other people in your family & please don't feel you ought to 'be brave'.

You've come to the right place here for understanding & support so do post again as & when you feel you want to. You won't be alone here. Look after yourself if you possibly can xx
