How bad is chemotherapy?

Hello,

My mom has been diagnosed with cancer and the way forward would be first chemotherapy and then surgery if and when it is possible. However she is kinda weak now because of two surgeries in FEB 2019. Some of my relatives and and friends say that chemotherapy is really bad and it takes a bad toll on a persons health. Some even say that it causes jaundice, liver and kidneys fail due to the toxins, vomitting, weakness, etc. I just want to know how bad is chemotherapy? what could be the possible problems that might arise? Are there any ways around them? Any advice is highly welcome. Thank you.

  • Hi sodes

Cemotheropy is different with nearly everyone some people have no side effects at all others can be sick or just nauseous all the time, tingling (pins and neadles) hands and feet aches and pains all over, when i was in their was a gent next to me we got talking he'd had ten sessions, all side effects were tingling in one arm, when seeing nurses should get a paper to sign tells what side effects,. There can be. Best wishes.

  • Hi there ..

It must be so worrying when it's your mum ... they are meant to look after us ... it's all new when it reverses ... and now it's time to hold their hand ...

Billy is right, all cancers and treatments differ ... there's so many different sinarios... but if I were you, I'd write down All my questions ... i .e ... is she well enough... what percentage does she have with and without chemo .. would having a total masectomy be of benifit .. what the chemo is they are offering .. what help will she get during and after chemo ... then weigh everything up .. but knowing exactly what she's having will help her decide ... and with her permission, call her oncology team and ask them .. and write down what they tell you, as believe me most of it may go over your head .. anything you dont understand ask them to explain ..it depends on what surgery she's all ready had in Feb,  which isn't long ago ... then you can call our nurses on here .. phone number on main page .. or McMillan .. it really helped me talking to them ..

I had a grade 3 and a total right masectomy.... but I was 63 ... and they are not as important at that age .. for me any way .. l was offered radiotherapy,  which I declined as I have very weak bones any way .. with scoliosis and stenosis and more .. but everyone should get all the facts ... then talk to your mum, and ask her what she wants ...

So hold on in there .. you can always come on here... to chat or vent ... and I'm sure you'll get lots of different opinions ... but in the end it's for your mum to have the last say ... I bet she's really proud of you .. and so glad she's got you right there holding her hand ...  Chrissie xx
