Compassionate leave rights

I posted recently about my dad, who has been diagnosed with terminal mesothelioma. He has rapidly deteriorated in the past few days and we're looking at moving him to a hospice.

I have just started a new job and I don't know if they will support me through this. I don't have a contract and it's not the kind of job I can easily take time off from. I need to be able to spend some time with my dad when it gets close to the end but I'm terrified I'll lose my job. Has anyone had a similar experience? Can they let me go, legally, seeing as I don't have a contract? I would normally call ACAS for advice but their lines are only open during the time I'm at work, and I don't have a lunchbreak I could call them in.

I literally can't afford to lose this job, I've been out of work for a year and nearly lost my home.
