Mesothelioma and Atrial Fibrillation

Hi. Dad was diagnosed with Mesothelioma at the end of January this year, with a prognosis of 12 months. Over the last month, Dad has developed atrial fibrillation (AF) and over the last few days it has been constant. He has been prescribed Bisoprolol by the hospital and is also taking the blood thinner, Clopidogrel, as he has a stroke 15 years ago. We have been told that the AF isn’t life threatening, just irritating. Dad seems so tired and has a headache most of the time. Battling with this on top of the Mesothelioma is taking it out of him. We’re trying to do the best we can and the hospice has been great, but we don’t have much faith in Dad’s GP and he has to go and see him for a review of his medication. Does anyone know if we can request a second opinion from anyone?

  • Hello HelJoh,

I am sorry to hear about your dad's condition and I can imagine it must be really difficult for you all at the moment to manage. The daily headache must be so hard for your dad to live with and combined with the mesothelioma it must really be exhausting for him.

If you don't have much faith in your dad's GP, you are perfectly entitled to a second opinion and can request to see a different doctor. You can find out more about getting a second opinion on our website here.

I hope this helps and that you will also hear from others here who have had a similar experience. One of our members, the lovely [@jules54]‍ cared for her husband who also had mesothelioma and she may have additional insights on this or tips to share with you!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi HelJoh

Really feel for you as the Mesothelioma on it's own is enough to cope with without added complications. As Moderator Lucie (thanks for the mention) says anyone can request a second opinion and if your Dad gives his permission you can discuss his situation fully with his medical team.  I wonder if you have spoken to his doctor/consultant who he is seeing for the mesothelioma as they should definitely know about other symptoms as it may just need a medication 'tweak' which they could help with.

Whilst my hubby was poorly and tiredness was a big part of his mesothelioma journey we certainly had to adapt pretty quickly to his frequent naps and increased reliance on pain relief and it can take some time to get levels right especially if other medical factors have to be taken into account.  My hubby's GP was good support but had to 'ask the experts' herself  because she had not dealt with this particular disease in the surgery before.

I am happy to try and answer queries you may have if you want to chat more.  Jules54
