My Husband has Throat Cancer

My husband has been diagnosed with throat cancer.  T1 N2 M0.  Had a tonsillectomy two weeks ago and starts 7 weeks of  Radiotherapy and three sessions of chemo next week.  All started with a lump in his neck which wouldnt go down after rounds of antibiotics.  We have been told that the treatment is aggressive and its going to be horrendous especially the last three to four weeks of treatment.  We are both in our late 40's and I was wondering first of all how bad does it get,  both for him as the patient and me as the only care giver...  I am happy to answer any questions.  Thank you so much..

  • Hi Donna2019

im so sorry to hear about your Husband.. you’ve come to the right place where everyone on here are so generous with their advice and support.

I know exactly what you are going through right now as my hubby was also diagnosed with throat cancer in January 2018..we are also both in our 40s..He’s also started off with a lump on his neck and within 4 weeks of having all the scans tests done he was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer with the primary being in the epiglottis..he also had his tonsils removed and had the chemo and 6 weeks of radiotherapy..the treatment was quite brutal. He couldn’t eat for a couple of months and was on a nasal feeding tube for a while.. The chemo made him quite ill and he lost nearly 3 stone and with the radiotherapy.. that left him with nasty burns on his neck. It was like a nappy rash..

After going through all the treatment (which has quite a high survival rate) in September 2018 he got the all clear (best words I’ve ever heard) and 6 weeks after he went back to work..He has all his taste buds back and can now eat everything just like he did before diagnosis with the help of a glass of water..He does still suffer with his fingers and feet but that’s nerve damage from the chemo but he just gets on with life. He is a very positive person and doesn’t let anything beat him in life..if something was broken he would fix it no matter how long it took and with myself and four daughters we all fought it together and kept him going.

There are others on here that have written  amazing blogs about their personal journey with throat cancer and I’m sure they’ll post their links very soon..they are very helpful and comforting to read..

Im always hear if you need a chat or even pm message me..Thinking if you both..take care

  • Hiya...I'm so sorry you've had to come to this site and share your story but it's so helpful and there will be loads of people on here than can give you great advice especially the ones that have done blogs..

we are with the NHS..hubby first had an appointment with the hospital on 3rd January 2018 and within 4 weeks he was having all different scans and tests done..the hospital was so on the ball with it all and on the 25th of January that's when we received the dreaded news.

it's so normal to feel the way you do and of course it's scary for everyone but my husband is such a positive person which made all of us stay positive throughout his treatment. He had an op in feb to remove his tonsils and  operate on his epiglottis. Not long after he stated chemo then in April he had 6 weeks of radiotherapy (daily) it all sounds so scary and everyone is different but throat cancer is very treatable..

He can eat everything now but he did go through a stage where he was on a feeding tube for a few weeks but that's normal too..

please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like a chat.

    best wishes

    Tina

  • Hi Tina

my husband is like yours so positive but I just dread what he has to go through

he has copd and a pacemaker so,starts off with disadvantages

i just wish the world would swallow us both up

    sorty to,sound so down but.

I just feel so depressed and I can't show it to him

did your husband have radiation treatment as well as chemo

    can he swallow ok?

thanks again Tina and I wish you both well

lots of love and care to you both

  • Hi Tina

sorry yes your husband did have radiotherapy.

my question is can he swallow normally and has his salva glands dried up.

there is so,much scary things on the internet butI can't  help myself

imthink you have all been very brave

has he been given the all clear

    i do,hope so

    love to you both

  • Hi Dorrie..

you will come across so much that you won't understand no doubt this is why you are turning to the internet (Like it did) to educate yourself on it all by sometimes it's not a good thing to do and things have come a long way too..I know it's hard not to read up on it all..

I think the only thing you can do is try  not worry to much until you see the Dr again and he will advise you with what will happen next..my husband was stage 4 and he beat it. I always said to him giving up is not an option!!  His salava glands did dry up but the dr will give you husband something for that.
He can eat everything now like he did pre cancer.
He got the all clear in September 2018 and went back to work in October same year.

2019 was another scary year for us as he was diagnosed with lung cancer..September he had 55%  of his left lung removed..he went back to work not long after then 2020  he was furloughed cos of Covid but was diagnosed with lung cancer again (twice in 10 months) in his right lung and had 30% of that removed in July this year..he was due to go back to work in November but is furloughed again until March..you've really got to have the strength mentally and physically and don't let anything beat you in life..don't get me wrong I broke down plenty of times but didn't show it to anyone..I had my hubby my 4daughters and granddaughter to be strong for..if I broke down in front of them then everything else would collapse.just try and be as normal as possible..you will go through a bad patch but stay positive it will give  your strength to get through this..

im sending you all my love to you both.

I'll always be here for you's xx
