My Dad has advanced prostate cancer, metastatized to bone

Hello,

I've come here because I'm not sure where else to go. I've just found out in the past week that my Dad has prostate cancer, which has metasised to his pubic bone. His PSA levels were extrremely high, 164, and his Gleason score is 10. He's 72, but you wouldn't think it. He is so fit and healthy and he only went to the doctors in the first place because he had a pain in his leg, which we now know is because it spread to his bone. I am an only child, I'm 26, I live near my parents and have been staying over since we find out.

My Dad is mostly postive, he has started his hormone therapy and in July he will have 6 rounds of chemo. They can manage but they can't cure. They said it's really agressive cancer, but they can keep him going, but for how long? I can't bear to watch my Dad go through this pain, he's the kindest, sweetest most generous man. And my Mum, my Dad is my mums world, she just keeps asking me "how are we going to cope" - she's imagining herself all alone in this home they built together, and to be honest, so am I. I am trying to be strong and resume normality but this has changed everything. I thought my Dad would live to see me get married, go far in my career. I want him to be there, to watch me grow. I don't want him to leave Mum all alone. I don't have any siblings to share this with - my friends are supportive and my boyfriend too but, I just feel so hopeless. Would be reassured to hear of anyone else in the same boat.

Thank you

  • Hi you could say I'm in the same boat. Scores are a bit different when found my psa was1500 gleason 8 grade 4 lt had gone from prostate to lymph nodes, bones (pelvis, spine and ribs) and a lung. That was 2016 Feb, as your dad I have hormone therapy, cemotheropy 6 sessions I'm on hormones for life my psa January this year 0.8 it's been lower is rising slowly specialist wants to wait till gets to 20 then more kemo to take it down again. Remember I've been over 3 years now I've been fine. Good luck with your dads treatment.

  • Hi

My dad was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer 2 months ago. He is 79 years old and the cancer has spread to his pelvis, hip, ribs, spine and lymph nodes between the lungs. His oncologist says he is not fit for chemo and radiotherapy would not benefit him. He started on Prostap last month and his psa is down to 1.2.  Can anyone tell me what lies ahead for him, as the oncologist did not give us any idea of prognosis? Thank you.

  • Hi Tracy, i don't know if they will do it but it has been known that they can use a weaker dose of cemotheropy so the effects arnt as strong it won't work as well,, I'm not trying to get your hopes up but i have heard of it being done, weather it will work I'm afraid I've no idea,, as will they even consider it, plausible.. Best wishes.. Billy

  • Hi Billy

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

They've taken every treatment option off the table except hormone therapy. I just wish I knew if this will be enough to stop the cancer spreading.

Thanks again for your support, much appreciated.
