Hello

Hello,

I have never done this before but to be honest I don't really know who to talk to. I'm 17 years old and both of my parents are suffering cancer. My mother has stage 3 breast cancer and my dad has stage 3 prostate cancer. My dad has been a trooper this past year but he's not looking very hopeful and my mum was only diagnosed a couple of days ago. Do any of you have any advice as to how I could handle this as I am just shocked at the moment.

Tom

  • Hi Tom,

I'm really sorry to hear about your parents. Dealing with a parent’s diagnosis is hard at any age but at 17... I can only imagine what you must be feeling. Please stay strong and hopeful. Remember that ever day new scientific discoveries are being made, people are being treated and more people are living longer with cancer or even beat it. I'm sure your parents are in excellent hands. But sometimes we forget about our own health and mental well-being. Designate sometime for yourself during the day- this could be for mediation, exercise or even watch Netflix. Headspace is also a great app to use- it can help with sleep, anxiety and breathing exercises. Do you have any siblings or good friends/family members you could speak to? School counsellors, local counselling services and GP’s are also really helpful. There are also lots of charities and organisations who can support you and your family. Speak with Macmillan (0808 808 00 00) or the YouCan Youth Cancer Support (01732 844874).

Shock is a natural emotion to experience when dealing with cancer. It will take some time to process all the information but always ask for help even when you feel like you’re coping. Speak with your parents and remember you’re not alone.

All my prayers are with you and your parents.

    Hugs,

    Arin
