Melanoma

My mum has melanoma (which is metastatic) and at the beginning of January ended up in hospital with either pleursy or blood clot and was having trouble breathing, we were told not to leave the hospital, three days later she moved to a palliative care unit and then two weeks after that moved to a local hospital.  She is bed ridden but apart from the melanoma she is ok, it has developed - sort of spots on top of the skin and she has now developed a spot on her neck and two on her scalp.  We have been told she won't get home and that the outcome is not good but wondering what to expect after 8 weeks of hospital care.

  • Hi littleredhen,

I'm sorry to hear about your mum & that she is now having palliative care. It's difficult to say what to expect as it sounds like your mum is defying their prognosis so far. However, there will sadly come a point when her condition will overcome her. If the hospital thought she could be moved home or to a hospice to be cared for they would do it, but it sounds like that window of opportunity has passed & moving your mum would cause her more suffering than caring for her in hospital.

Your mum will be kept pain free and comfortable and my thoughts are with you & your family.
