Signet ring adenocarcinoma - 30 years old male

Good Afternoon!

I am desperately trying to find infomation and help regarding signet ring adenocarcinoma.

My husband has been recently diagnosed with "metastatic cancer of unknown primary, histology consistent with upper gastrointestinal primary and signet ring adenocarcinoma on the biopsy". Initially he was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism. CT scans were done and except of blood clots in the lungs, enlarged lymph node in stomach area was seen. He was discharged from hospital and the biopsy was taken from his lymph node. Meanwhile he was still not feeling good and we went back to see the doctors. Suddenly the doctor said that on the CT scan his stomach wall is thickened and they have to check it. He was admitted again, waiting for the lymph node biopsy results. Once the signer ring cells were found in the biopsy, gastroscopy was done to check the thickened wall of the stomach and he was reffered to oncologist. First gastroscopy didn't show anything, not oprical, not through the samples taken for biopsy. Oncologist recommended second gastroscopy and colonoscopy. There was some inflammation seen in the stomach. We are still waiting for second stomach samples biopsy results.

He was scheduled for the PET/CT scan to be done tomorrow. Because of his blood clots, he was continously taking Fragmin injections. The injection he did on Sunday caused big bleeding bruise, so on Monday we went back to the emergency. He was advised to stop the injections. I wanted to confirm this with his oncologist, as she was underlining that blood thinning medicine will be necessary for him for th rest of his life. After cross checking Monday's blood tests, the oncologist decided to call him again for admission on Tuesday. Suddenly yesterday we were told that the cancer has spread to the liver and that tomorrow he has to start chemiotherapy, because we can't waste any time.

I feel very confused, is it really possible to understand form the blood tests how cancer has spread? His PET/CT scan was cancelled, he is having a CT scan istead today. I was hoping that PET scan will give more details, as still the only thing we are sure about (considering the test results) are signet ring cells in the lymph node. I don't have any experience in dealing with cancer and there are so many questions in my mind. I don't understand how he can begin treatment if still the doctors are not sure where the cancer is. I am just worried that he will begin treatment which may not be 100% suitable. And why everything is happening in so much rush? Why not to wait few more days for the PET/CT scan, maybe it could give more answers, I don't know. The leading oncologist was off yesterday and today, we will see her tomorrow but tomorrow the treatment is supposed to begin already.

Please, if anyone had any experience with similar situation, every detail is helpful for us.

  • Hello Dominika and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I can imagine you must feel very confused at the moment and I hope you get some definite answers soon -  it must be all the more difficult for you as the cancer is very rare.

I hope the CT scan provided some answers. You have probably seen the oncologist by now and I hope you have found out a little bit more by now. Did you find out anything new? We have some information on our website on signet cell cancer which you can find here. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 and you can give them a ring Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you feel it would help to talk things through with them.

I also hope you will manage to reach out to others here who have been in a similar situation. I've had a little look on the forum for you and found this thread by [@Fenrir]‍ who shared his/her signet ring adenocarcinoma experience so even though it may not be exactly the same type, it might be a good person for you to connect with.

Keep us updated if you can on how things develop for your husband. We're always here for you for support whenever you want to talk to others who understand what you are going through.

    Best wishes,
