Father with prostate cancer and PSA level is over 500

someone very close to me has prostrate cancer and their PSA bloods have gone up and are now 500, I have been looking online to see how high the PSA blood can go up to but hard to find this anywhere?! Does anyone know as 500 sees very very high!!

  • Hi 500 is High have a look at billygoat on prostate cancer and living with cancer I've seen some a lot higher than mine you don't say if he has any scans yet or what his gleason score is. • Hi my husbands PSA level was 1760 in January now it is 600 after one course of chem and taking a course of female hormones. We still don't quite understand eveything about PSA levels but we seem to be winning at the moment

  • Hi its hard to explain but I'll try the prostate has chemicals in it that get into the blood, when you get cancer the chemicals increase in number which gets your psa more cancer higher psa the gleason score is easier low numbers means cancer is near the prostate big number cancer is spreading other places. Hope that helps.

  • Thank you Billy Everything has been a whirl since we found out. Thought we were winning but just got back from doctors he has told us the chemo treatment is pallative not to cure the cancer but to make my husband comfortable as he is terminal. No one has said that before am devastated .

  • Hi,

Just discovered this post and hope my input will still have some value.

My PSA was 2670 in November 2018, after a course of docetaxel it dropped to 48, but was soon climbing again by September 2019, started Enzalutamide in November 2019, when PSA was upto 650. It dropped for a while but then started to increase again.  Stopped Goserelin implants in August 2020 and Enzalutamide in September.  Started a course of Chemo (Cabazitaxel) in October 2020.Two more treatments to go but PSA is now over 3000 and rising.

Accoring to the scans I had a couple of months ago  metastisis is limited to the bones (chest, sternum, clavicles, scapulas, spine, and hips.  So, after Chemo the plan is Radium 223, every 4 weeks for 6 months.  Not sure what comes after that?

So a high PSA in itself is not necessarily an indicator of the seriousness of the disease.  It is only in the last few months that I have had significant pain which usually occurs in the 2 or 3 days before chemo.  Otherwise, I have really only endured problems with side effects from the treatment, the worst being tired but unable to sleep, restlessness, hot flushes etc.  This was mainly caused by the hormone treatment; as my cancer is hormone resistant/castration resistant, it seemed rather pointless flooding my body with female hormones, nevertheless it was a few months before my consultant agreed.

Unfortunately, I feel there is a tendency for a 'one size fits all' approach and side effects of medication seem to be largely ignored by the health professionals.  My recommendation is that you enquire about the purpose and efficacy of medicines that are being prescribed, as often they are precautionary and the side effects unpleasant.

Best wishes for a longer life,

    David
