My dad's got stomach cancer

Hello my name is Carl , my dad's got stage 4 stomach cancer which has gone to his liver. He hasn't eaten anything for 4 weeks but still drinks abit of water. He is an amazing man hes been in bed for 4 weeks and is getting very weak but still trys to go to the toilet by him self but we have to step in and help him. My question is after he has drunk some water he coughs a little bit after, the nurse told us to stop giving him water because it can cause pneumonia but he asks for water , what do I do to help him be more comfortable.

  • Hello Carlo and welcome.  I am sorry to learn of your dad's decline .  I don't know the answer to your question (but possibly others can).  I am suggesting that you might like to telephone the nurses here (Freefone 0808 800 4040 8am-5pm weekdays) and ask them about this in the meantime.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Hello Annie,

Sorry to hear you been through this with your mum.   Thank you for kind words, you sound like a kind hearted sole.  I really didn't think this would happen to my dad he's always been healthy , positive strong man , and to watch him faid away is braking my heart. He's  my hero and when he's not here anymore I'll miss him deeply.

    Kind Regards,. Carl .

  • Hi Carlo, the nurse is right, however your GP should prescribe some nutilis thickener which you can mix with water and hot drinks too, it has no flavour but thickens the liquid and makes swallowing easier and he will be less likely to cough. My Dad is in the same place as yours but he hiccups and burps rather than coughs. Try water with fresh lemon juice, my Dad says everything tastes sweet and has refused all the prescribed supplements except strawberry flavoured calogen shots, something your GP could also prescribe. Be strong, best wishes to you and your family, Cath

  • Hello Cath,  Iam sorry you're going through this it isn't nice to watch someone you love going through this wicked illness. My dad didn't like any of them prescription food drinks the dietitian recommend . To be honest my hole experience with the NHS over this is not a good one. Once we said we would care for my dad at home which is his wish we've been pretty much left alone not knowing what to expect. A district nurse comes in once a week for about 10 minutes.

But anyway thank you for your advice, and I wish you and your family all the best and your dad.

    Kind Regards Carl.

  • Thanks Carlo, have you seen a Macmillan nurse yet? GP should have referred you, and they apply for Continuing care funding and can arrange a care package to give you a break. BTW lemon flavoured pellegrino is very refreshing and you can add thickner to it, even tho it's fizzy, my Dad seems to like it in small amounts.  Best wishes Cath
