Final signs

Dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer in December which has spread to lungs and bones. He was discharged from hospital about 2 weeks ago effectively die at home. He hasnt eaten hardly anything for 3 weeks and is very weak. He sleeps a lot and is sometimes confused. Although Mum thinks he is close to death,  the nurses seem to think his vitals are okay and he may still have a while to live. This has left us very confused as we dont know whether we are coming and going. Grateful for any advice or experience of people who have gone through this.

  • Hi Yeo

There is a very good book by palliative care consultant Kathryn Mannix called With the End in Mind which explains the end of life process and is intended for the wider public and not just health professionals.  Although the process is of course different for each individual, she believes there are signs along the way which are indicators of certain stages. I really wish I had read it before I found myself in the same position as you.

It's very difficult for us laypeople - we don't know the signs like doctors and nurses and we can't read them so we are left wondering what the hell is going on and where we are in the middle of it all. I can hear your confusion and I felt exactly the same.

Best advice I ever received was just to be there fully in the moment with my Mum and Dad, spending as much precious time with them as possible. There is a comfort in being together, holding hands and talking lovingly, whatever the stage, right up until the last.

I really feel for you at this time and I send you my best wishes for the next few weeks.

    With love
