Mum's anal/skin cancer

Hello everyone, I have kind of joined this group in the possible hope to kind of get a 2nd opinion (altho I'm sure the consultant is very colour and and I'm in some sort of denial) and any advice would be much appreciated.

Mum for a couple of years had been complaining of having a hemeroid but being the age she is she decided not to see the doctor about this until recently. The doctor didn't even examine her and passed this of as a hemeroid and prescribed her some cream. This didn't work so after about a week and a half she went back to the gp and again he didn't examine her and gave her some different cream. Within a week she was in that much pain she ended up in medway hospital with a funganting wound on the opening of her back passage. She was in hospital for at least a month and it was decided she would benefit from having a stoma fitted which she has had done. They took a biopsy at the same time as fitting the stoma and it came back it was cancer. Fast forwarding a few weeks of scans and appointments and finally getting to see a oncologist at maidstone hospital, they have said the the cancer has spread to a lymph gland in her groin but nowhere else. From the notes I saw on his desk they have staged this as a 3.3.1. The oncologist has said this cancer is a type of skin cancer that has spread inwards. It has not affected any major organs or tissue but has spread from the anus opening to her lymph gland in the groin and unfortunately there is not much they are able to do except try and shrink the growth with radiotherapy and manage the pain. She starts her treatment on the 6th of Feb. I was wondering if we was able to ask for chemo or anything else that might be able to help in this situation or if I'm possible grabbing to straws in desperate hope for my mum. Is there anything I can do about the gp's incompetence and how to go about it.

Thanks in advance

  • Hello, I am sorry to hear about your mums cancer but you described exactly the same as I had.I was told over a matter of 3 years that what I had was A a skin tag  B. A  haematoma  C A fissure

It was embarrassing to go to the Doctors but each time I was told it was nothing much. Finally I insisted on seeing a specialist and was told it was possibly Cancer. It was removed and proved to be Cancer. Fortunately it had not spread and they are checking me every 3 months.

I would stress to people not to be embarrassed by the area your problem is in. Keep getting checked.

I do now have Cancer in the Spine after Breast Cancer 4 years ago .Treated with   radiotherapy ( which was wonderful and did not hurt at all ) I was told if I wanted Chemotherapy I could .That some ladies like to be sure and have everything offered to them.

  • Hello John; sorry to read of your mum's cancer.  You should speak to the doctor treating your mum about possible treatments.  I suspect there are not really many options as otherwise they should have already talked to you about them but it doesn't hurt to ask.  Sometimes a treatment is not appropriate for one reason or another.  Regarding your gp, I attach a link that tells you how to make a complaint if you wish to do this.  Best wishes.  Annie
