cancer diagnosis and stopping smoking

hello, my sister has revently been diagnosed with a gioblastoma grade 4, which has recently been removed, and starts radiation and chemo next week.ive been encouraging her to vape for the last couple of weeks, which shes taken to, but is doing this as well as smoking. shes thinking about giving up, but keeps stalling. ive read that giving up smoking will lessen the radiation and chemo side effects.does anyone have any advice about the benefits of giving up, or not, given her condition. thanks.

  • Hello service67,

It's nice of you to be so supportive with your sister and to be trying to encourage her to stop smoking. You obviously care a lot about her. It sounds like your sister might need some support to help her give up smoking. Perhaps you could also talk to her medical team about this and since she is also dealing with treatment for Glioblastoma,  they may be able to point you in the right direction as to support that is available to someone in her particular circumstances. Her consultant might, for example, be aware of the effects smoking may have on her specific condition and on her treatment so it is definitely a good idea to discuss this in further detail with her medical team and see what they suggest.

You might also be interested in taking a look at our general page on smoking and cancer which includes tips on how to stop smoking.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you wish to talk things through with them.

Keep us updated if you can on how things develop for your sister. I hope the start of her treatment goes well next week.
