Dad getting chemo

I am just looking for some advice.  Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, he had half lung removed end of November in hospital. Over Christmas with chest infection and is due to start 3 rounds of chemo on 15th Jan.  I was going to take time off work to help mum with caring for dad (she doesnt keep well either).  When is the best time? Is there a best time? Advice, suggestions?

Thanks

  • Hi

i am so sorry to hear about your Dad.

i don’t know what kind of chemo your dad will be having but I have just had my 2nd round of chemo for breast cancer so can only offer advice from how I felt, but everyone can have different effects.

I generally felt ok for the first couple of days then about day 3- 4 started to feel a bit worse and more tired. I was really grateful to have someone close by to cook me a meal and just for some company when I was awake sometimes just to take my mind off the nausea.

I currently have a 3 week gap between treatments and start to feel much better after the first week.

hope it helps a little and I wish your dad lots of luck. He clearly has a great support in place.

  • Thanks Scruff, he is getting 3loads of iv chemo over 3 week periods so sounds similar.  Hubby just wanting to know what I would be doing over the time off???? I'm sure I'll ve sitting with my feet up.!!!

You sound positive too. Keep your chin up.

  • I will be honest it can be tough when you start to feel unwell and there have a couple of times when I have said I can’t do it anymore.

But, when I feel a bit more like me I feel a bit more positive and remember I am doing this for my family and friends as much as myself.

try not to be too upset if your dad struggles from time to time it is perfectly normal but I am sure with all of your support he will soldier through it.

Enjoy the time you have off work to be with him even if you are just ‘putting your feet up’. The time together is priceless.
