Renal cell carcinoma

My husband has been diagnosed with a 2.4cms renal cell carcinoma. I can't understand why he is to have no treatment. The Urologist and MDT have decided to wait for 6 months and then he has to have another CT scan. Why wait 6 months? It is in the mid pole of his right kidney and they have said it is in a difficult place to biopsy so they will wait for the 6 months....... By waiting 6 months does this not mean the tumour could grow ?

  • Ebjb, welcome to the Cancer Chat forum although I'm sorry about your husband's diagnosis.

The medical team that have been assigned to your husband are the only ones that can really answer your questions so if you feel you don't know why treatment has been put on hold for 6 months it may be a good idea to have a chat with them to get these answers.

Our cancer nurses are available by phone Monday - Friday as well if you'd like to have a quick chat with them about this. You can contact them on 0808 800 4040, between 9a.m - 5p.m.

It's been a little while since these two members have been on the forum but hopefully by mentioning them in this post, they'll pop back to share their experiences of this diagnosis with you. They are [@alan3]‍ and [@katiejoe]‍.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi ebjb  i would certainly ask for a second opinion, Personally I would insist on having eirther a partial nephrectomy if possible or a nephrectony where they take the whole kidney out. I belong to several groups and there are 2 new members both with 2 cm RCC they are being operated on in january having only just been diagnosed. Mine was 5.5 cm I had my kidney removed 2 years 4 months ago all good since then,  yes defunatly the tumour can grow dont quote me but they can grow 2 cm a year and if they are agressive more than that.   I woud not wait for a biopsy considering that they have already diagnosed RCC  alan
