Biopsy wait

Hi my father has skin cancer and had surgery to remove it through the week. When removing it the found some on his nose and told him the were taking a biopsy an said he would have the results in 6 weeks. Am just wondering if results usually take this long because it seems like a long time to wait for results.

  • Hi Franky,

Yes I'm afraid the average waiting time for biopsy results is 4 to 6 weeks. They sometimes give the patient an appointment for 6 weeks time to give the consultant chance to receive the results, study them and, should they be positive for skin cancer, have a multi disciplinary meeting to decide on the next step before seeing the patient. Sometimes the results come back quicker & the appointment may be brought forward or the results given by phone or letter (if it's a negative result) but most consultants like to give the results in person. I hope your father isn't waiting too long & the results bring him good news.
