Large Polyps

My mum has been found to have 4 large polyps however too big to remove.  Intial biopsies show no cancer, though consultant says cant nbe sure there is no cancer without removel, we he agrees she wouldnt survive do to age.  He has now said palliative care.  I am confused, as no diagnosis but palliative care and leaflets given about living with bowel cancer.

  • Hello and thanks for posting.

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation and this is understandably a worrying time for all the family.

I'm not surprised you have been left feeling confused as it does sound like a bombshell has been dropped that you weren't expecting. Unfortunately without being involved myself in your mum's care I can't shed any more light onto the situation. I think all in all you need to speak to the doctor involved again so he can explain the situation to your mum and the rest of the family and also so you can have the opportunity to ask any questions that you have.

Reading between the lines they are unable to give a definite diagnosis but it sounds like they have suspicions and often if polpys are left untreated they are at risk of developing into cancer or causing other complications as they get bigger. Sadly as you have said your mum isn't fit or well enough to have an operation and so I'm afraid to say this but her outlook may be poor.  However you need to hear this from the specialist team involved and this is why it is important to get back into contact with them.

I really hope you know more soon, please get back to us with any more questions you may have or if you want to talk to one of the nurses do call on 0808 800 4040, we are here Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm.

    Take care,

    Naomi
